Heat pump water heaters
A heat pump water heater — sometimes called a hybrid — moves heat from the surrounding air into the water rather than generating it electrically. It uses roughly a third of the energy of a standard electric tank.
Installed cost is $3,500–$6,000 before any rebates. It isn't right for every space, and the space is what decides it.
Running cost
Compared with standard electric, most households see a substantial reduction. Against gas, it depends on the relationship between BC electricity and gas rates, which moves. We'll do the comparison for your actual usage rather than quoting a generic figure.
⚠️ It's slower to recover than gas. In a household with heavy simultaneous demand, size up.
What installation involves
Space and airflow assessment first · Electrical check — most need a dedicated 240V circuit · Condensate drain, since the unit produces water as it dehumidifies · Removal of the old tank · Installation, commissioning and mode configuration · Rebate documentation where applicable
What it costs
Unit and standard install $3,500–$6,000 · Before rebates
